Susurrations, Part Six

*
Tom was fondled to consciousness. "Mmmmm."
*
"What was that? I didn't quite catch it." Chakotay's low whisper teased his ear.
*
He turned his head and opened his eyes. "I said, 'mmmmm'."
*
"Oh. I take it that means you want more?"
*
"Mm hmm."
*
Chakotay obliged by stroking him lightly, from shoulder to hip, down and back up again. Tom felt his skin being awakened and he wondered whether Chakotay was insatiable. After last night, he wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. As it was, he was glad he wouldn't be sitting at the helm all day long.
*
Dark brown eyes rested their gaze on him. "I could get used to this."
*
"To what? Fucking me through the mattress every night?" Tom yawned.
*
Smiling, Chakotay laughed and replied, "That, too, but I meant waking up next to you."
*
"Oh. Well, it is nice. Sure beats having the computer wake me up." Tom leaned over and kissed Chakotay. "You know, I never thought the sex would be so good between us."
*
"Neither did I." Chakotay pushed Tom over onto his back again. "I want to know something...is this just a fling?"
*
"Do you want it to be?"
*
"No. That's not what I need right now." Chakotay propped himself up on an elbow and looked down at him. "Tell me what you want, Tom."
*
He sighed and decided to go for broke. "What do I want? I want a real relationship; one I can count on. I want more than just sex, laughs, and a good time. I want it all, Chakotay." He paused then and reached out to touch the light brown skin of Chakotay's chest. "I want your heart."
*
"Why *my* heart? Why not someone else's?" Chakotay stopped stroking him and peered into his eyes.
*
"Because no one affects me the way you do," he admitted quietly.
*
Chakotay reacted with silence. Then he flopped onto his back and stared at the ceiling.
*
Tom rolled over and watched him, wondering what thoughts were going through his mind. Had he blown it? Was he moving too quickly? He fretted over the possibility that all they could have was a superficial, meaningless, bed-friend arrangement. Sick to death of those, he reached out a hand and clasped Chakotay's in his own.
*
Long moments later, Chakotay said, "I don't give my heart easily and it takes time and effort to build a relationship like the one you say you want."
*
He snuggled closer to Chakotay and replied, "I know. I'm willing to work for it."
*
"You are?"
*
"Yeah. I think we could make it happen. I even think I could fall in love with you."
*
"You think so?"
*
"Mm hmm." Tom rubbed his nose across Chakotay's cheek. "I may be halfway there already."
*
Chakotay digested this information silently although his arms encircled Tom, holding him tightly.
*
Before Tom could say anything else, he was commed.
*
"Neelix to Paris."
*
Collapsing onto Chakotay's chest, he sighed resignedly. "Paris here."
*
"It's before breakfast, Tom. I'm in the mess hall right now."
*
"Okay, Neelix. I'll be there in fifteen minutes. Paris out."
*
Tom kissed Chakotay. "Sorry about that. It won't happen again." Just as he made to rise, he was commed once more.
*
"Kim to Paris."
*
"Shit." He stared at Chakotay, who stared back. "Paris here."
*
"Tom, you never did comm me last night. Can we have breakfast together?"
*
"Sure, Harry. Meet me in the mess hall in thirty minutes. Paris out." He looked down at Chakotay and was surprised to see a smile on his face. "What?"
*
"Oh, I was just thinking about what it might be like to live with you. Between ship's business on my end and your 'social' obligations, we'd be lucky to have any time at all without interruptions."
*
Tom smiled. "Don't worry about it. My responsibilities in that area will soon be over."
*
"They'd better be. If you're going to be with me, then I'll want to have my way with you in the mornings." Chakotay grinned his most wicked of grins, his dimples making an appearance.
*
"Oh, is that so?" Tom inquired in a smarmy tone of voice.
*
"Yes, that's so. I'm a horny bastard--and don't you forget it." He smacked Tom's ass and continued, "Go on, you gadfly. Your public awaits."
*
Smiling widely, he kissed Chakotay once more and got up to shower.
*

*
Chakotay lay in Tom's bed and thought about all the things he'd said. He wasn't sure they could make it work but he was willing to try. The idea that he'd spend the rest of his life alone out here was enough to scare him into taking the risks that being with Tom would engender.
*
Paris was a good officer, a good friend to his friends, a loyal member of the crew and a fantastic fuck, to boot. He sighed as he heard the shower stop and waited for Tom to emerge from the bathroom. Putting his thoughts on hold, he watched as the blond unselfconsciously wandered out naked and proceeded to get dressed.
*
Tom was beautiful as well, Chakotay thought. His brain came back online again whether he liked it or not. He played spectator to Tom's early morning show and discovered that it, alone, was enough to get him hard.
*
Shit, was he so desperate that he would jump at any chance to get his rocks off? Or was it that he had not been entirely honest with himself? Thinking about his mixed reactions to the pilot over the last several years, he had to admit that bedding Tom had been much more satisfying than killing him...besides, he could do it more than once.
*
He had to wonder, what was it about Tom that got him so hot? Before he could continue pondering the possibilities, Tom smiled his best sunny smile and rearranged Chakotay's brain yet again.
*
He felt the mattress dip as Tom leaned over to give him a kiss. "I'll see you at lunch, I hope."
*
"Okay. I'll try to meet you in the mess hall at 1300."
*
"Sounds like a plan. See you then."
*
Chakotay just nodded.

*
Entering the mess hall, Tom found Neelix literally up to his eyeballs in the Talaxian version of pancakes. Grabbing a platter, he helped their chef move them onto the warming dishes and said, "So tell me, what's so important that it's driving you nuts?"
*
Neelix brought out a liter of the local equivalent of olalaberry syrup and replied, "I couldn't wait a minute longer so I stated my intentions to her, Tom, loud and clear."
*
"You did!" Tom almost dropped the platter he was holding, he was that surprised. "What did she say?"
*
Neelix smiled up at him, "She agreed to go out with me. In fact, she said she would be honored if I would escort her to the next performance of the New London Symphony Orchestra." He sighed happily and continued, "We'll be double-dating with Seven and the Doctor. Isn't that wonderful?"
*
Tom just stared, then he said, "Yes, it is. But I know her, and the way she treated me the other day makes me wonder what you did to get on her good side. Come on, Neelix, tell me the truth," he wheedled as best he could.
*
Neelix's spots darkened with the Talaxian equivalent of a blush, then he said softly, "It's my pheromones. I have conscious control over them. And then there's the herbs I put into the lasagna, but they don't amount to much by themselves."
*
Before Tom could ask any more questions, Harry came over, dropped a hand heavily on his shoulder and stated, "We need to talk. Now."
*

*
Chakotay met with the Captain, briefly. She was sending out a lot of mixed signals but this time she didn't seem hostile. He picked up on embarrassment, sorrow and suppressed excitement. Still, she appeared to be unapproachable and he decided to leave well enough alone. Sooner or later she'd tell him what was bothering her.
*
In the meantime, they agreed he would spend the day tracking down the odd readings that had to do with a spate of strange replicator activity while she attended to things on the bridge. Unluckily for her, she would be spending all her time with nothing but the most junior officers, except for Harry Kim.
*
Chakotay chuckled at what she would have to put up with and thought that the Universe had its own way of settling scores. Smiling, he wished her good luck and headed down to visit the lower decks, where there were several unoccupied crew cabins that he intended to investigate.

*
Tom spent the morning in Sickbay doing the Doctor's bidding. He performed a variety of mundane chores regarding the care of their medical equipment. Grateful that he could do his job on his feet, he thought about Chakotay, Harry, and Neelix, in that order.
*
Chakotay was the biggest emotional challenge he'd ever taken on in his life and he wasn't sure how to go about winning the man over. The sex part had been relatively easy. It seemed like they were made for each other in bed.
*
He was unaware of the smile that the thought brought to his lips, until the Doctor approached him and said, "I didn't know that recalibrating medical tricorders could be such an amusing pastime."
*
Tom quickly schooled his expression to reflect one of intense concentration and replied, "It isn't. I know how important it is to have properly functioning equipment."
*
"That's good to hear, Lieutenant, because the next time I have to use one of these on you, I will make certain to choose one that you have serviced personally."
*
As the Doctor moved away, he decided that contemplating the ins and outs of his dealings with Chakotay was something better done in private. On the other hand, Harry was worth frowning over.
*
At breakfast, he'd discovered that his friend had tried out the new outfit last night but had encountered a double dose of feminine resistance. It seemed his best buddy needed Dom lessons. Fuck. Where was he going to find someone to introduce Harry to the fine art of being a Master?
*
Wracking his brain, he wondered who could help, thinking of all the intricacies and how-to information that Harry would need to know in order to handle the Delaney twins. Those shady ladies were consummate sluts and required much more than a firm hand to keep them in line.
*
The Doctor approached him again and peered over his shoulder as he bent down to work on yet another tricorder. "Mr. Paris, may I ask why you haven't once taken a seat to perform your duties today? It would be far easier on your sacroiliac if you did."
*
Tom straightened, looked the Doctor right in his holographic eyes and replied evenly, "No. You may not ask." He then bent down again to finish his work.
*
The Doctor retreated to his office in silence. Tom snorted as he saw the hologram leave the outer room and thought, what business was it of his how he chose to do his work? In Tom's opinion, as long as it got done, there was no reason to complain.
*
Just then, Seven of Nine entered the room. She looked around and noted that the Doctor was in his office. Quickly, she walked over to Tom and said, "Lieutenant Paris, I would like to speak to you when you have a free moment."
*
Surprised, Tom stood up straight and replied, "I'm booked solid until I get off shift. Why don't you comm me then and I'll see what I can do."
*
Seven nodded precisely once and stated flatly, "That is acceptable." Then she headed toward the Doctor's private domain.
*
Tom sighed and grabbed the nearest well-padded chair. What the fuck was going on with everyone? Settling his butt gingerly on the seat, he toyed with the tricorder in front of him and thought back to Neelix's confession early this morning.
*
He couldn't believe that Janeway would agree to go out on a date with Neelix. What was she thinking? How would it look to the rest of the crew? And even more importantly, would it work out in the long run? As he pondered these questions, he worked on the tricorder and wished he could share all of this information with Chakotay.
*
That man knew things, he was certain of it and those very things might come in handy with all the various situations he was being asked to give advice about. Perhaps it was time to get permission to share a few details with his lover, but only the bare minimum.
*
His hand moved to his badge just as Seven left the Doctor's office. She shot him an impenetrable glance and he had to wonder what she wanted from him.
*

*
Chakotay toured several empty cabins and determined that they all had been recently visited. The question was, by whom? Had Maintenance been doing a very thorough job of keeping them all in pristine condition or had someone else found another use for them?
*
The replicators in each one had been used lately; that much he knew for sure. The one thing that made it difficult to discover the truth was that everything that had been replicated had been done within the bounds of someone's rations. When he tried to find out whose rations had been used, the computer stated, "That information is not available."
*
There was no sign of 'illegal' activity per se, just that no foodstuffs had been involved. Only such things that were made out of rubber, wood, leather, metal, paper and plastics had been programmed. Add to that the fact that nobody lived in these quarters and what you got was another mystery.
*
He sat down on a dustless sofa and sighed. There had to be a clue here somewhere.
*

*
Tom was surprised when the Doctor unexpectedly gave him the afternoon off. He thought about asking why but then decided not to rock the boat. Thanking the Doctor, he left Sickbay and called for a location check on Chakotay. Finding him to be somewhere in the bowels of the ship, he shook his head and went on a personal search mission.
*
Wandering through uninhabited crew country, he wondered why Chakotay was down here. Maybe he was meeting someone secretly. He still felt uncertain about where he and Chakotay were headed and so decided that anything was possible.
*
Pausing outside a cabin door, he knocked gently. Nothing happened. He waited a moment then raised his fist to pound when suddenly, the door opened and an inquisitive Chakotay stood there staring at him.
*
"What are you doing here, Tom?"
*
"I came looking for you. The Doc gave me the afternoon off and I thought I'd see what you were up to. I hoped we could have lunch together."
*
Chakotay smiled and said, "Well, come inside and I'll tell you what I'm up against."
*
Tom nodded and entered the small cabin, his gaze drawn automatically to the minuscule viewport. This was a place that had almost no room to speak of. It was for the most junior of crew and had just the bare essentials for living. Over the years out here in the Delta Quadrant, they had lost a lot of people; hardly anyone still ranked so low as to have to live in a place like this.
*
He looked around and thought back to his Academy days, then shook his head at the memories. Trying to remain in the present, he inquired, "Tell me what's going on--if you can."
*
Chakotay sent him a puzzled glance and offered him the padd. "Check out these statistics. It seems that someone or something has taken up residence, at least temporarily, in some of the unoccupied cabins down here. And the computer can't or won't identify who it is."
*
Tom settled on the short sofa and perused the padd's contents while Chakotay paced around the small room. Hmm, the elements listed were very interesting indeed. Some of them rang a bell in his mind but he wasn't sure why.
*
Frowning in concentration, he set the padd aside and watched Chakotay pace. After a few moments he realized that all he was watching was the Commander's ass as he walked around the tiny room. It was a very fine ass he had to admit. One that he would like to get to know more intimately.
*
A fine idea blossomed in his mind and he rose, smiling. "Chakotay, how about we try an experiment here. Let's replicate something and see how
*
it turns up on the logs."
*
The Commander turned toward him and asked, "What do you have in mind? And remember that I'm still on duty."
*
Tom took Chakotay's face in his hands. Kissing him deeply until the older man responded, he wedged a leg between Chakotay's and rubbed a little, murmuring, "So take a lunch break and let's get some lube."
*
Harsh breathing filled his ear, then he was gripped so tightly he was afraid his ribs were in danger of being broken. He grunted and responded by squeezing Chakotay's ass cheeks as hard as he could.
*
"Is that all you want, Tom?" Chakotay whispered against his lips.
*
Taken by surprise, Tom squirmed trying to ease the grip that was threatening to cut off his air supply permanently. "No," he gasped.
*
Instantly, he was freed and laid on the sofa gently. Chakotay stood up and stared down at him. "Lube?" Chakotay asked incredulously. "Is that the only thing you can think of?"
*
"Of course not!" he panted. Catching his breath, he managed to continue, "Food would be good, too."
*
Chakotay just smirked evilly and walked over to the replicator. It seemed he wasn't the only horny bastard around.
